On connaît
Joe Paterno et Bobby Bowden, mais au fait qui sont les autres

Ils ne sont que dix dans le club des “300”,
toutes divisions confondues. Trois sont encore en activité
: John Gagliardi (St John’s University),
Bobby Bowden (Florida State University) et
Joe Paterno (Penn State University). Certains ont
fait toute leur carrière dans la même université
(Eddie Robinson pendant 56 ans à Grambling State, Joe
Paterno et ses 55 années passées à Penn
State dont 42 en tant que head coach, Roy Kidd durant 39 années
à Eastern Kentucky et Harold ‘‘Tubby’’
Raymond avec 36 années à Delaware), d’autres
ont connu jusqu'à six institutions (Glenn Scobey Warner
à Georgia, Cornell, Carlisle Indian Industrial School,
Pittsburgh, Stanford et Temple).

Dans cette liste de noms fameux, Joe
Paterno est celui qui a atteint le plus rapidement
les 200 victoires. Il est suivi par Tom Osborne (Nebraska)
et Bo Schembechler (Michigan). Le coach des Cornhuskers a
terminé sa carrière en trombe, enregistrant
un impressionnant 60-3 pour ses cinq dernières saisons.
Le nombre de titres remportés est
également un indicateur pour ‘‘mesurer’’
le prestige d’un head coach. C’est Paul W. Bryant
qui mène la course avec ses six titres (1961, 1964,
1965, 1973, 1978 et 1979) tous obtenus avec le Crimson Tide
d’Alabama.

State, 363-121-3). Mack Brown (Texas, 179-96-1), Lloyd Carr
(Michigan, 113-36), Larry Coker (Miami, 60-15), Phillip Fulmer
(Tennessee, 137-41), Urban Meyer (Florida, 61-12), Nick Saban
(LSU, 91-42-1), Steve Spurrier (Florida, 157-50-2), Bob Stoops
(Oklahoma, 86-19) et Jim Tressel (Ohio State, 197-71-2) comptent
chacun un championnat à leur palmarès. Dans
cette liste, Larry Coker (sans poste), Nick Saban (Alabama)
et Steve Spurrier (South Carolina) ont quitté l’université
avec laquelle ils ont remporté le titre national.
Cette année, Brett Bielema (Wisconsin,
12-1), Steve Kragthorpe (Louisville, 29-22), Les Miles (LSU,
50-25), Rich Rodriguez (West Virginia, 95-60-2) ou encore
Tommy Tuberville (Auburn, 96-49) essaieront eux aussi d’entrer
dans le clan des entraîneurs couronnés.
